A political ecology of health. In attempting to understand the structural processes that underlie the complex relationship between health, environment and economy (i.e., those of politicized environments; Bryant, 1998) this research employs Mayer's (1996) political ecology of disease framework. This framework provides an effective theoretical merger of population health and political ecology. This paper asserts that political ecology would contribute by examining the political economy of disease, interrogating health discourses, and understanding the interactions between social and environmental systems. The benefits of a political ecology of health are demonstrated through an examination of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa.
